Backyard Resort - Downers Grove
For this new build in Downers Grove, the objective was to create a mountain retreat defined by a clean, modern aesthetic. We focused on crisp lines and a sophisticated material palette to establish a look that is both rugged and refined.
The design begins with Endicott Manganese charcoal clay bricks from Lurvey, chosen for their deep, contemporary tone. These are paired with Smoky Mountain natural stone slabs to ground the space in a natural feel. To ensure the landscape feels like a true extension of the architecture, the garden walls and entrance monuments were crafted to match the home’s masonry exactly.
Water and fire serve as the primary focal points of the outdoor experience. A custom pond provides the tranquil sound of moving water and a home for the client’s fish, while a natural stone fire pit offers a classic gathering spot. Because the homeowner is a dedicated garden lover, we curated a planting plan that balances structure with vibrant, seasonal interest. A variety of perennials ensure blooms throughout the year, anchored by an extensive display of spring tulips that reinforces the project's polished, intentional spirit.
